The Japanese revolution in European fashion of the 70s changed the conception of human body in European costume. For many centuries European garments aspired to make a “fashionable” body according to the ideal of beauty dominating in epoch. But Japanese designers offered an “alternative body”.
The image of an “alternative body” in contemporary fashion is based on the epatage, the vanguard art destruction of human body and the aesthetics of an “ugly body”. Such negation of natural beauty, harmony and symmetry of natural human body reflects modern cultural tendencies of the posthuman reality. Nowadays the modern culture is denying the harmonious person as the criterion of all existing.
Japanese designers R.Kawacubo, I.Myake, Y.Yamamoto, designing fashionable garments, play at different parts of human body, transform and deform it. Couturiers concentrate on the pathology and ugliness of human body and prove that even ugly human body can be beautiful. This is an agonizing beauty that had been “dethroned” and then was “crowned” again. The conception of an “alternative body” gives equal rights to a “perfect” human body and to an injured body. Japanese couturiers show that costume design is not only the reviving of corporal forms in clothes. Due to their garments they allow person to be who he is.
