Background — Glaucoma is an important eye disease that causes blindness with a frequency second only to blindness due to cataracts. Early detection of the condition is critical to preventing irreversible blindness in those affected. Objective — The purpose of this study was therefore to determine the prevalence of glaucoma in an eye clinic in Ghana, West Africa and help raise awareness of the situation on the ground. Methods and Results — The study is a retrospective study of the Out-Patient Department morbidity of glaucoma at the Emmavick Eye Clinic in Sunyani, Ghana spanning a period of 35 months. The study included patients visiting the clinic for the first time. The diagnostics tools used included tonometry, ophthalmoscopy (examination of optic disc) and perimetry. Out of a total of 5828 patients seen over the study period, 460 (7.89%) subjects presented with glaucoma. The prevalence of glaucoma in female Adults was 9.52% whilst that of male adults was 8.77%. The prevalence of glaucoma in children was 1.41%. Conclusion — The result of the present study affirms the fact that glaucoma is more prevalent in the adult population than in the younger population. This situation has a huge toll on the economy of developing countries like Ghana where there is need of much human resource to drive the advance toward high-income status. Mass education and screening is needed to identify affected individuals for early treatment and inform the populace about the insidious nature of glaucoma and its potential to irreversibly impair vision in affected individuals.

We showed that the peptide DQLETQTRELETAYSNLLRD corresponding to N-terminal Leucine zipper motif (LZM) of the protein is able to form amyloid-like fibrils. The possible role of this motif in myocilin aggregation is discussed.

Research objective: comparative analysis of distant thermography, Doppler ultrasound and pupillary reactions in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma at various stages of the disease with compensated intraocular pressure. Materials. 129 patients (216 eyes) with diagnosis of POAG at various stages ofthe disease (the main group) have been examined. Intraocular pressure has been normalized with medications, or with medications + laser surgery. The control group has consisted of patients with initial and immature cataract of similar age and sex (30 patients — 52 eyes). All patients have experienced thermal, Doppler study, and a study of pupil response to light. Results. It has been revealed that the temperature ofthe open optic fissure in patients with POAG correlated with hemodynamics in the central retinal artery and short posterior ciliary arteries. It has been also noted the reduction of pupillary reaction in the progression of glaucoma optic neuropathy. Conclusion. Data of distant thermography, Doppler ultrasound and video recording of pupillary reaction are different with various stages of glaucoma process. The investigation allows to use these methods for monitoring of patients with primary open-angle glaucoma

The research goal was to estimate the effectiveness of complex pharmacophysiotherapy of patients with initial glaucoma simplex on the basis of analysis of morphology, visual cortex electrobiological activity and regional blood flow level.
80 patients (149 eyes) aged 60-75 were examined. All of them had an initial glaucoma simplex of II or III stage and normalized intraocular pressure. Depending on the stage of glaucoma there were two groups of patients and each group contained two sub-groups. patients of sub-group A were treated by percutaneous electrostimulation with feedback based on visual evoked biopotentials; and patients of sub-group В were treated by traditional electrostimulation. All patients got complex eye examination before and after the therapeutic course, and in 3 months after it.
Method of selection of optimal electrostimulation parameters was worked out for the appropriate retina ganglionary cell effect. Individually selected electrostimulation in combination with nootropics contributes to eye hemodynamics improvement. Addition of magnetotherapy to the complex therapy of patients with eye hemodynamics leads to improvement of functional results. the increase of functional results of complex therapy with magnetotherapy that affects cervical sympathetic ganglia has been determined in patients with eye hemodynamics
